Guided Reading is one of the foundational elements of literacy block. It is one component of shared reading during which the teacher provides support for small, flexible groups of readers. This is often the time when I introduce and teach specific reading strategies, such as context clues, letter and sound knowledge, and syntax or word structure, as they read a text or book that is unfamiliar to them. The goal of guided reading is for children to use these strategies independently on their way to becoming fluent, proficient readers. |
While I am doing reading groups, the other children are doing a modified version of The Daily 5 and Literacy Centers. Children are authentically practicing the essential skills needed to become skilled readers and writers.
